Watto looks back at Birmingham 1-0 Coventry
Features, Match Center, Match Reports, News | admin | August 14, 2011 at 1:30 pmHaving vented my spleen last week on the destruction wreaked upon the club and upsetting many of my readers with a dose of reality its time to look at what is actually going on the pitch.
The loyal 19,000 that turned out today were almost comatose by half time as we were forced to listen to the Covos bleating on about riots. Had there been anything worth nicking in Coventry then maybe you would have suffered the same misfortunes.
Apart from the impressive Sammy Clingan there wasn’t too much of value in the Sky Blues line up and their retro 60’s kit looked a little over washed and worse for wear.
Blues started brightly and a nice combination of Burke and Carr saw a nice ball into the feet of Woods who laid it into the path of Gomis. The move was worthy of a goal but a brave block thwarted the Frenchman.
Blues became over elaborate from then on and several moves broke down with no sight of the Sky Blue goal. The visitors grew in confidence and Myhill was forced into a great save from a long range Clingan effort.
By half time Blues had reduced the home crowd to yawns and half time was a welcome relief from the boredom. Blues did liven up second half and the best move of the match saw Beausejour fly down the left wing and his excellent cross was met by Woods on the near post but the ball skewed over from 4 yards.
By now Blues were dominating and playing some sweet football. The end product however was nil and with 2 minutes to go Rooney replaced Woods. The Irishman’s enthusiasm was evident and with almost his first significant touch he glanced a header from Beausejour’s cross which was brilliantly touched onto the post by a previously untested Joe Murphy. Rooney reacted quickly and retrieved the ball and turned it in to the path of Fahey who fired home. Fahey was rewarded for some hard work but he must cut out the wild cross and inaccurate pass.
Burke was taking the eye on the right and was brought down in the box with two official ten yards away. In spite of the foul clearly taking place in the box the ball was moved outside and the free kick came to nothing.
Blues go into their European campaign on the back of two decent performances but must up the scoring rate that has plagued us for seasons. At the moment Blues still have to keep a clean sheet to win and if they concede they can’t win the game. Chris Hughton is doing a good job with what he has at his disposal. The three unfit strikers need to be got onto the field or replaced. The injuries they appear to have are just too convenient. If they don’t want to be here then ship them out.
